A huge congratulations to Dr Anna Fergusson who received the Bevan Werry Speaker Award from the New Zealand Association of Mathematics Teachers (NZAMT).

The award is given to someone who is an expert in their field and who is willing and able to travel around the region to do presentations and support mathematics and statistics teachers and students. The award is given every two years at the NZAMT conference.

Anna’s Bevan Werry keynote focused on data landscapes, exploring the first impressions schools make via the home page of their school website (see slide below). The concept of data landscapes is to connect learners with the data they are using (e.g. Anna focused on schools around Avondale since that’s where she used to teach!).

Anna previously won the 2021 Teaching Statistics Trust best paper award for her work in this area, On traversing the data landscape: Introducing APIs to data-science students.
